I read somewhere recently that the Lexmark printers actually keep track of
the last two or three ink cartridge serial numbers. The article said that
to get around this, you had to have three cartridges so you could "rotate"
them after refilling. This is another reason I usually buy Epson
printers. AThe main reasons being that you can have a six cartridge
printer, but cheap relpacements (7 to 10 bucks each) and only replace the
cartriges you need to replace.

I'm not certain. There is a feature in the software that tells you how
full the cartridge is, so there must be some kind of sensor but whether
it's smart enough to prevent refilling I don't know.

Do you know if the cartridges have any electronic components on them to
prevent refilling?

Somewhat off-topic but I was at Target this weekend and they had a
little Lexmark ink-jet printer, I think the model was Z517 or something
like that, and it was on clearance for just $17. Of course the ink is
what kills you--the combo pack that has both a black and a color
cartridge runs about $35. It does come with one color cartridge to
start you out, but no black cartridge.

It's Mac and PC compatible, and if you're just looking for a cheap
occasional-use printer this might be worth picking up.
