First, have your int. DVD checked/serviced (still under warranty?).   
Why isn't it working to duplicate your files?  Having a working DVD  
burner would seem to be the simplest option for you just for backing  
up lots of pictures and songs.

To answer your question, my personal choice for a backup device is an  
ext. F/W drive [from LaCie]; it is a dependable name, and a bootable  
disk drive doubles as a fully functional drive when needed, but there  
are lots of options to choose from, including tape drives for simple  
backup.  From my point of view, however much disk space a person has,  
over time, is never enough!   And of course, spendable income is  
always involved.

Got your Mac products catalog handy?  If not, try macmall or  
macwarehouse, just to name a couple of sites, and do some price and  
product comparisons for your needs.
