Try this:
Open the document using TextEdit (assuming you are running Panther?)
then print using mid to high quality and see if it improves.
Oddly enough you might find that some application/hardware combinations
do not print as well as the freebie Apple ones do (for example, Preview
prints PhotoShop files on inkjets better than PhotoShop does for the
same file).
AppleWorks may print your document better than Word does, if you have
AppleWorks.
What I am thinking though is that the image that is being printed is
the low resolution screen image (a placeholder that is generated to be
viewed on the screen with the better one being sent to the printer).
This may be fixed by checking the preference (configuration) settings
to see if there is an option for this.
