After switching from dot matrix printer to ink jet,
I was shocked to learn that
ink cartridges do not last nearly as long as the ribbons dot
matrix printers use
and cost MUCH more ($25 / $6)
They give away the razors, make a killing on the blades.
I use syringes without needles.
I'm now working on my second pint of black ink.
(Still on 1st pints of colors.)
The cartridges have sponges in them.
If the sponge has dried out,
it will not immediately absorb liquids,
so if you don't want to put ink in slooowly.,
dampened it with 2ccs alcohol & let stand a few minutes
I cannot tell when the sponges are full,
& so add ink until it drips out the bottom.
I have many old cartridges,
& refill as many as I can in a single session.
If I have a problem with one, I tape a note to it.
I, too, have ruined shirts and pants,
but I have more than paid for them.
Now I expect to spill ink and dress appropriately.
I have bought on eBay 2 used Epson printers that use the same
cartridges as my first ink jet printer,
to avoid the new printers which use only cartridges that cannot be refilled.
