Stuart I am on my 5th version of the iPod I have had them all. They just get better every time. I always get the largest model. So now I have a 60 gig model. Remember that you can also use the iPod as a hard drive. I had I hard drive failure a couple of weeks ago and I was able to back up all the files that had not been backed on to the iPod before the drive totally locked up. I transport video files back and forth from home to the studio so think of the iPod in those terms also.
As far as programs to use with your iPod Senuti Is a great program to retrieve music files off of the iPod. http://wbyoung.ambitiouslemon.com/senuti/ Using tinkertool you can also retrieve the music off your iPod by turning on the view invisible files. You can then see the music files on you iPod.
