I can tell you about my experience at the Panera Bread locations with 
my PowerBook.  I'm not sure about range, I didn't try it in the parking 
lot.  It's basically automatic.  The airport card recognizes their wifi 
signal, a menu opens asking you if you want to use that signal, and 
then you are on.  They do not use a password to access it.  Panera 
offers the service for free, Borders Books charges per use or unlimited 
uses for a larger fee.  Happy surfing.
