Stuart,
I am no expert on this, but before I was to send a 15"titanium
powerbook up to my daughter in chicago, I put in a airport card(it uses
the original one) and went up to highland coffee, knowing they had
wi-fi there. When I powered up, the airport applet at top left showed
the signal, I clicked on it and it showed the name of the account to
which I clicked on and that was it, I was surfin and drinkin. If a cafe
had their's password protected, then I'm sure they would give that to
you. As long as your network settings in system prefs are set for
airport, you should be good to go. I guess their range is the same as
most wireless routers, 150' or so.
Hope this helps.
