Hi Allen, I?ve fought this battle when Office X was first released and I don?t even use an abundance of fonts. It could be as simple as corrupt Office X preferences. It wasn?t my problem. Word, Excel and Powerpoint would unexpectedly quit on launch. This doesn?t sound like your problem but is probably related based on your problem description.
After submitting my problem to a forum on http://www.macosxhints.com/, someone suggested running the Console application in the background while I attempted to launch Word. When Word quit, it generated log entries to the console which some folks in the forum deciphered for me. It pointed towards corrupt fonts which, more than likely, existed within my Fonts folder in my OS 9 System Folder. A little trial and error and the problem was fixed. While some may say that doing this under OS X and then logging out and back in should work, it didn?t for me. After purging the suspect fonts, a system restart did the trick. All of this is documented on Microsoft?s site as well as in some detailed MacFixIt archives. Sorry, but I haven?t searched for the specific links yet. Hope something here works for you.
