Hey Allan,

You don't need to be running in Classic mode for fonts in your OS 9 System
Folder to be a potential problem.  OS X loads those font resources, Classic
or not.

Your right, your problem is not quite the same as those cited in those links
but a font menu which appears gibberish appears to be a clue.  It doesn't
take but a moment to find out if your OS 9 fonts are a problem.

Other things to try would be to:

Delete specific Office X preferences
Replace Microsoft flavored fonts with updates they have on their web site
Make sure you have installed the Office X Service Release 1

Somewhere I vaguely recall reading about other user's inability to select
from their font menu the font they were intending to select.  Maybe this
will ring a bell with someone.
