Thanks, I looked at the links and saved them for more reference, but it they did not seem to fit the situation exactly. For instance, the quits don't come at the splash screen, but tens of minutes later. And the link says that fonts in Classic can be a cause, but I haven't run Classic for weeks. It does say to disable (remove) bad fonts from OSX, and I think I can do that because in WYSIWYG they look like Chinese, so that would be my next move. I suppose they won't be important fonts.
