Stuart, I have a LaCie FireWire external drive (250 GB). It's a couple of years old and after about a year or so, it began to be reluctant to show up on the desktop or would disconnect itself. I discovered that if the firewire cord which connects to the external drive is put in a bind where it connects to the external drive, it makes connection. My guess is a sloppy connector inside the LaCie drive. Might give that a try.
