Well, I have a situation here.
For over two years a friend has been sending me Microsoft Office - Word
documents from his PC (to my Mac). Until about 3 months ago there were
no problems, I could use MacLinks Plus translator and open the documents.
Last winter I purchased Microsoft Office 2004 for the Mac. And still no
problem. Word would open his documents just fine.
Then in September things changed. Since then, whenever I try to open
Word Documents from him I get this message:
Word cannot open this document. The document might be in use
or might not be a valid Word document.
(document name)
(I also run Windows XP under Parallels on my computer (but it makes no
difference if Windows is running or not). I have Office installed on
Windows and I get a similar message whenever I attempt to open these
documents under windows.)
In an attempt to open the documents I established a connection to the
Windows XP computer on my network and placed the word document on the
pc then went to the pc and using Office on the PC attempted to open the
document - it wouldn't open.
FYI - I also get word docs from another friend and have no problem
opening them.
Tonight I had my friend send the word docs to my wife's email on the PC.
Lo and behold the files opened! When I bring the files from the PC to
the Mac (via a network link) they open with no problem.
But if I email the files from my wife's account on the PC to my account
on the Mac I cannot open the files on the Mac.
Next I had my friend send me the files to my .Mac email address. I then
opened FireFox, logged on to my .Mac email account, opened the message
from my friend and saved my files to disk. And word would open them.
But when I have my mail program retrieve the message from my .Mac
account the files will not open.
I am using PowerMail 5.5.3 build 4480. I have set up filters to place
attachments into a data folder (on the data partition of my MacBook
Pro). The path looks like this:
Data drive // downloads // downloads-mail // Jim
As I said I get word docs from another friend, and they download to the
same folder, and I have no problem opening them.
Also, neither maclinks plus nor Neo Office will open the bad documents
but both will open the good copies I save from .Mac or bring over from
my wife's email.
My friend sending the corrupted documents is using microsoft office
2000 - SR1, I don't know what version of Office the other guy is using.
I have emailed him asking.
What a pain! Any help will be appreciated.
