Is it possible he is using Office 2007? If so, all you need is the
With the Office Open XML Converter, which you can download from

http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx?pid=download&location=/
mac/download/Office2004/
ConverterBeta_0_2.xml&secid=4&ssid=36&flgnosysreq=True

This enables you to convert the following:

Word Document (*.docx)
Word Macro-Enabled Document (*.docm)
PowerPoint Presentation (*.pptx)
PowerPoint Show (*.ppsx)
PowerPoint Template (*.potx)
I had this problem earlier in the fall, and the download solved it.
