Not counting paid up-dates, I have had to buy three (3) full, legal
versions of Retrospect or Retrospect Express. New versions could not
read old back-ups, and were less flexible to use. I quit using them.
I got tired of paying money and wrestling with the software.
I think it's fair to say that Retrospect Express is everyone's
_former_ back-up software.
Others love SuperDuper, which I have not tried. Carbon Copy Cloner is
shareware; you can try it for free. I did not know which boxes to
check. SilverKeeper had fewer boxes to check, and is free from LaCie,
so that's what I use (on my Western Digital external HDs).

and when you say "do not attempt to restore with the last copy of
your back-up", what method are you referring to? Time Machine? I've
had several good experiences restoring from SuperDuper! and even
disk utility.
