I use the Apple wireless Mighty Mouse, with my laptop, that is what I
am using as I type to you now, and I use the new wireless Keyboard
that is a duplication of the laptop keyboard but it gives me the
freedom to work at a level that is more convenient as you will see if
you go to the link that shows where the laptop sits.
I also use the Apple Airport Express units to hook to my printers so
they become "network" printers for any computer. It has worked great
for years and really improved with the later version of the Airport
Extreme.
I will be glad to see if anyone uses a dock for the other cords but
one solution for the USB and Firewire is the external monitor that I
though you had mentioned you may use. I have an Apple 23" with USB &
Firewire cords plugged into it so when I connect the video adapter to
the Macbook then those items are connected.
I also use the APC laptop stand. This allows me to tilt the unit to
the desired angle, gives me space for cooling and it has ports for USB
connections so all I have to do is connect ONE USB cable from the
stand to the laptop and then all the other items are connected.

The one thing I note here is that if I use the laptop as the main
computer, I will still need to invest in some peripherals to make it
viable. What do you use at home to hook all these peripherals into
so you don’t have to keep pulling the cords in and out each time you
use it at home. I have 2 printers, 1 scanner, 2 extra hard drives,
DSL router and wireless router.

The only time mine gets real hot is when I have been doing a lot of
video work or I am using Fusion a lot.
Both really use the CPU so I would expect that.
Now heat is a subjective term so what is hot to one is not hot to
someone else.
