My 2 cents: I own and use as my only computer a 17" MacBook Pro. Before that it was 17" Powerbook (and before that a 15" Powerbook ... and so on back to the days of the 13" PowerPC laptops). I carry my computer twice a day -- a short walk to the car and then into the office each morning and back to the car and home in the evening. It's in a shoulder-strap computer case, so the weight is no real problem. I have thought about getting a desktop for either home or office, but the thought of keeping everything synched all the time fills me with dread. I really like having all my files right there at my fingertips wherever I am.
I back up to an external hard drive both at home and at the office. If I traveled a lot on planes (which I don't) I would probably want a lighter computer, but because I do a little bit of design work I would really miss the larger screen.
