I don't know about Apple TV but I do know about TIVO! I have a roof top antenna and I have a Series 1 (1st generation) TIVO DVR (digital video recorder). I also have a lifetime (of my TIVO box) subscription so I have no monthly fees (when I bought it a lifetime subscription was $295, now I think it's $399). My TIVO is connected to my phone line and it updates the TV schedule once a day (it's never interrupted a phone call in the 3 or 4 years that I have had TIVO).
You should get an HD TIVO (probably can't get a Series 1 any more-that's not HD ready). My series 1 TIVO doesn't yet recognize the analog to digital converter box I purchased but TIVO says it's working on the software upgrade for my DVR. I rarely watch TV without going through TIVO. I record the programs I want and watch them at my convenience. I skip the commercials! It is also possible to watch one channel while recording a program on another channel. If you watch a lot of tv I recommend getting a box that allows you to record two programs simultaneously. With TIVO when you watch television live and you can pause (for up to 30 minutes) the program to answer the phone, answer the call of mother nature, walk the dog, get a snack, or whatever and then restart the program from where you paused. You won't miss anything. TIVO is the best thing to come down the television pike since Philo Farnsworth built his first TV! It's hard to say whether I love my TIVO more than my recumbent bike or vice versa!
