While you can do some of the things that Tivo does with a basic DVR  
from cable.
You can not use the Tivo Transfer program to download a video file  
from the basic DVR.
There are ways to record in real time a video file that is on a basic  
DVR but again this is a real time recording and
not a download a file in the background while your Mac is doing  
something else.
The newer Tivo's allow you to actually add a extra hard drive to  
increase the size of your storage.
