Through a Google search I found a forum thread discussing the  
PowerPoint crash that I described in my previous post. Apparently on  
some MacBook and MacBook Pro models, the version of OpenGL that comes  
with 10.4 system software causes this crash. The specified cure is to  
upgrade to Leopard or to copy a different version of OpenGL into the  
system software.

I haven't had a chance to try either yet, but am hoping that that will  
resolve the issue.
