Open Office will open and save the *.ppt, *.pps and *.pot Powerpoint
formats.

The official Open Office version for the Mac is very new and still a bit
skanky. You should check out NeoOffice instead. It's a port of OO from a
different group and works pretty well. I've been using it as my main word
processor and spreadsheet for years.

I don't give talks, so I don't have any opinion about the presentation part
of the thing.

Both OO and NO are free. You don't have anything to lose by looking. Make
sure to get at least version 3.0 of NO because it's got a lot more chocolaty
goodness than the older ones.
