I actually don't have a two button mouse... purist at heart!  When I try to 
start it, it chimes and just comes up with a blank screen.  I was expecting at 
least an apple image or some kind of prompt.

Have you tried restarting while holding the left mouse button down?
That's the old "eject all" shortcut.
And when you say "blank screen," did it display anything?
