My opinion would be, yes, it's a waste of money. I've managed 20+ Macs on an 
office network that has no restrictions on Internet usage for more than 15 
years and the only time I ever had a problem with any viruses was some 
Microsoft Word macro viruses (that were found by virus-checkers but did no 
actual harm) back in the late 1990s. We've been running without any 
virus-protection software for at least the last 10 years and, to my knowledge, 
have not acquired any viruses or had problems that virus-protection software 
would have alleviated.

In fact, I've spent more time telling my employees that they didn't have to 
worry about whatever latest virus scare was going around then combatting any 
actual viruses.
