The plain MacBook is no longer in the Apple lineup. It has been replaced by the
entry-level MacBook Air for $999. I’m sure you can still buy a MacBook, if you
go to an Apple dealer in the next few weeks. Of course, the 13-inch MacBook Pro
is the successor to the Aluminum MacBook, which was rechristened as a Pro a
couple of years ago without much change to its specs.

I was kind of expecting this to happen because the Air is pretty close to what
I think all laptops will be like in a few years. The price of flash memory has
come down so fast recently that it makes little sense to have slow, fragile,
bulky and power hungry spinning hard drives in portable devices any more.

In fact, I fully expect the laptop computer itself to be marginalized because
most people can get by just fine with nothing more than an iPad-type device.
