If you're looking for open-source, try using Aquamacs [1]. It is Macified
version of the old-school Emacs program.

Plusses:
There are plenty of packages out there for editing all types of files.
It has smart abbreviations and context-senstive highlighting of keywords.
It has been made to be very Mac-like for many of its tasks.
It can be heavily customized if you understand the LISP programming language.

Minuses:
Some of the heavy-duty features use Emacs own odd keystrokes.
Customization and such feels quite Unixy.

Still, if you're looking for free and powerful, you will get free and powerful.

Cheers,

Bill
