I am in the same camp as your friends. Having a portal with open access to a
checking account seems far more dangerous to me than someone having a credit
card number. The former has a pile of cash sitting in it, the latter is
something which can be recalled quickly. (This is also the reason I refuse to
use debit cards.) I could also imagine that if someone emptied my checking
account, even if I found out about it quickly from Paypal, there would be all
sorts of bounced check/overdue payment fees to take care of.

I also like to have the credit card company sitting between me and someone
malicious. If they want to charge merchants 3% per charge for simple
bookkeeping, they can take all of the risk for someone stealing the number.

Of course, all of this is based on gut feelings and has nothing to do with how
secure information is overall. I have had a credit card with my name used twice
for bad charges; both times it came from hotels, and both times everything was
nixed from the bill immediately and without fuss.
