I forgot to mention that HFS+ doesn’t really have hard links. Apple just 
grafted something onto it that kinda, sorta but not quite behaves like hard 
links. They did this in order to make Time Machine work.

I can kind of see how this came about. The Apple Time Machine engineers were 
looking at real Unix file system backup utilities like rsync or bru and 
wistfully said “Gee, I wish we could do that.” So, they hacked an ugly kind of 
workalike hard link capability into the aged HFS+ system just to make Time 
Machine work.

This is why I’ve never really liked Time Machine.
