You are right, you would go USB to Lighting. You can’t go Lighting to Lighting since your MacBook is not lighting.
I’m guessing there is an app with Luna that communicates with the hardware. I would also imagine there is an IOS app that communicates with the hardware but since I’ve not purchased I’m not sure.
