MSIE can not connect to secure http sites that do not use security
certificates from a limited number of large sources such as Verisign. Firms
when they decide to set up a secure site for e-commerce can use security
certificates from certain sources which they must buy or rent. If they are
not prepared to do that they can use "private" security certificates or even
ones generated by the clients themselves. It is the last two types but
particularly the last one that are not available in MSIE. Increasingly for
privacy and security reasons sites are configured with client-generated
security certificates and consequently the scope for using MSIE is reduced.
The only alternative is to use Netscape with all its limitations. As usual
the attitude of MS is "bottom line first and existing users be damned and be
grateful for what we have given you already and we may or may not fix this
problem in our own time and not before and there is no way you the users can
influence us".
