Yay!
Okay, I did it - I just managed to add one of my private certificates to Mac
IE, and subsequently connect to my thus encrypted site, with nary a nasty
and annnoying dialog box.
It works.
In summary:
* You need access to a Windows box, and connect to your site using the
Windows box (Virtual PC works just fine).
* Proceed to add the private certificate, following Win IE's prompts.
* After you're done, the new certificate will be added (make sure it's DER)
to the list of certificates. WinIE has the convenient EXPORT... button - use
it, and save the certificate someplace you can find it again (like the
desktop).
* You can now drag this certificate (extension = .cer) to the Mac desktop,
if you're using Virtual PC.
* Either way, upload this certificate to the page you want to access. Create
a link to the certificate someplace on that page, in the form of 'click here
to connect securely using Mac IE'.
* Now, just go to that link with Mac IE, follow the prompts to add a new
certificate that pop up, and after you're done, you will be able to connect
to that site without annoying error/dialogs.
It works.
Now, the scolding - considering this is rather easy, I do have to ask a
simple question to the Mac IE team: Why do you make it so samn nebulous to
track down this information??? Seriously, at this point, it has taken me
roughly 2 years, and probably about another year since the first time I
asked this, to get a functionally satisfactory answer - which essentially
solved the whole issue we are discussing here.
What is so damn difficult about adding this information to a simple FAQ, or
better yet, making it part of the documentation (it is present in neither, I
just checked, or pretty much quickly volunteering this kind of information,
including the above HOWTO, when someone asks this question.
Geez crimminy, for crying out loud, it would have avoided accusations of
dark conspiracies by Denes, and frustration and exasperation on my part, and
of undoubtedly countless other who are believed to not need this feature :-)
May I strongly suggest to post this simple work-around in a clear location,
and stop keeping easy solutions well-hidden. Please?
It's obvious that the feature that everyone wants to see added to IE *IS*
already part of it, just not overtly functional, nor easily accessible - at
the very least, make the information easy to access.
