hey, ray that's cool. Apple business practices leave a lot to be desired.
But the crap going at redmond is hardly good business. The most dubious
reason to purchase anything is 'low price'. If windows won by providing
shoddy products at a low
price then you can say they are giving the market what they want. So
what? There will never be as many cadillacs as Yugos and Pinto's. I
don't think it would help anybody for cadillac to go after the
pinto/yugo market.
You may not get what you pay for, but rarely do you get more. I over saw
the automation of 1000 sales reps for a used to be premier biotech
company. I selected 3 vendors for a pilot project. Two of the vendors
where Wintel the other Apple. This was back in 93, and I had no clue
about either platform nor did I care. Which ever one could do the job
and caused the least headaches is it. 3 pilot groups made up of 30
people for a 1 month shake down. After 2 weeks I had logged over 300
support calls from the Wintel group, and less then 20 from the Apple
group. Well thats that, right. Apple whens hands down. Remember at this
time I did not know apple from snapple. As I went trough my presentation
the VP of sales which I later learned was a large stock older of
Microsoft and Dell, said at the end of the presentation "yeah but aren't
windows cheaper?" To which I can only say yes a lot cheaper. This was
when unwittingly I had enlisted in the platform wars. True I do enjoy
the Apple platform better, but what I really hate is cheapness being a
virtue. Any computer is not better then no computer. I went without
until I could purchase what I thought was the best platform.
The whole cheap is a bargain mentality has caused more suffering then
most people will ever know. I work in health care and have scene people
suffer from 'bargain' care.
After a horrendous accident that resulted in the deaths of several
patients at a midwest dialysis clinic was traced to a change in
filtering procedure, the manager who made the decision stated that the
new process was"way cheaper" then what they had been using. Safety,
efficacy, maintenance who cares "it's cheaper"
The first consideration should always be quality.
Can Apple do things from a customer point of view that make me crazy,
,,,hell yes. And we need to hold their collective feet to the fire when
they screw us. But the single most redeeming feature of Apple is they
are not the "low cost leader"
