I happen to work in an office where I nurse something like 20 Windows NT's,
and all my colleagues are running NT too. the one I call my own, I have to
reboot about every 14 days (I never turn it off), as it looses the
connection to the keyboard somehow. This year I have had to reinstall 7 of
the PC's, but except for real bad crashes, they have been very stable.
Apart from my own, which runs a lot of programs, they are only running a
very few designated programs and perhaps a text editor or two. That said,
it should be noted that due to the architecture of Windows, it is far
easier just to wipe the hard drive and install a new thing instead of
trying to pinpoint the error, whereas our Macs are much easier to
troubleshoot.

At home, apart from my G3 beige 233 and my iBook, on which I am writing
this, I have a Compaq Evo 400 NC laptop running Windows 2000 (company, not
my choice!). It is fairly stable too, and only needs to be booted every
fortnight too, when it gives up on the USB-Printer or ISDN-modem. That I
don't like using either Windows stuff is not because of lack of stability
(It would be if I were running 95 or 98 for sure), but because they don't
make you feel comfortable as my iBook running OSX 10.1.2 does. Since going
to 10.1.1 I have not had a single kernel panic, but that doesn't say much
since the uptime of this one has only been 5 days. My development unix
server at work has done about 150 days now, and that should be the minimum
we should be asking for.

In terms of speed, I find this 466 iBook faster than my 700 Mhz PC laptop
and for sure faster than the 400 Mhz desktop that I have as my 'own' PC at
work, but hey, this was not until 10.1 came out! (or before I went to OSX.
..)

Just my 2

Cheers,

Kim
