IIRC, no. Simply because, if you log into the computer with File Sharing 
started, you can log in using the same username and password that the 
machine has set in its File Sharing control panel. That will give you 
access to all hard drives on the machine, regardless of their "Sharing" 
status.

But certainly, if they are still having problems getting it to work, it 
couldn't hurt to at least share some folder manually.
