You may want to verify that your file sharing control panel has the boxes checked that say "enable file sharing over TCP/IP" and "enable program sharing over TCP/IP". With these boxes checked (assuming this is available on your version of Mac OS), file sharing does not use AppleTalk, and you should be able to network your computers using your wireless router. This does not solve the problem of printing to a localtalk printer over the network, because this needs Appletalk.

I have a Linksys (Cisco) BEFW11S4 wireless router. G3 Bronze wired to the router, G4 TiBook 800 wireless. I have had success using AppleTalk, with a caveat.

On the Cisco FAQ page it says pretty much the same thing David quotes from D-Link - that the router will NOT pass AppleTalk packets. Nevertheless, I can see the G3 just fine from the wireless G4. I surfed this issue quite a bit and it seems that most wireless routers do not pass AT packets unless specifically stated to do so (e.g. Asante's are designed to pass AT packets) but it is absolutely worth trying if you've already bought the box :) because many do pass the AT after all.

When I tried to use the same router to pass AT packets to an old-world device (Asante Etherprint box), however, I ran into a brick wall. I suggest from your (and my experience) that a key here may well be OS X, somehow allows AT packets. e.g. you can probably print from the wireless through the wired G4. My setup works fine that way.

As a workaround to get OS X to intervene, perhaps if you leave the 8600 mounted on the wired G4, you can then get to it from the wireless TiBook? Passing AT wired is no problem, as per statements below.

Thanks for those good sugestions. The TiBook does have Appletalk turned
on. The part of this problem that doesnt make sense to me is that the
G4 with OS X can see the 8600, but the tiBook can't. The G4 and 8600
are both hardwired to the the router, while the tiBook is wireless.
does that make a difference somehow?

Warren, I was experiencing the same problems with my D-Link DI-514 wireless router. After poking around D-Link's online tech support, I discovered that D-Link does not support AppleTalk over wireless.

Is there planned support for MAC and the D-Link wireless products?

Currently, there are no plans to have Mac drivers for our wireless network adapters. Our wireless adapters as well as our access points and wireless routers do work with Macintosh Airport wireless devices. Also, since Access Points, standalone wireless clients (DWL-810+), and routers do not require drivers, they will work with Macintosh.

Note:The Appletalk protocol will NOT be supported over a wireless connection.

This is a very interesting point that I was not aware of when I made my purchase. I'd like to hear if anyone has had success with using AppleTalk on any wireless router other than Apple's.
