Hmmm,

I have a pop server running on the machine that is the main 'server' in my local
network.

On the iPad I set up a pop mail account for the 'server' and specified that the
outgoing mail server was server.skynet ( the name of the server ).

I pulled up the mail app on the iPad and on the From line I clicked
[email protected].
and sent a small message to the mac book pro and viola it appeared on the
localhost
account on the mbp. ( I run a pop server on the mbp also ).

Here are the headers

        From: MyServer <[email protected]>
        Subject: Testing
        Date: December 6, 2010 3:18:16 PM EST
        To: [email protected]
        Return-Path: <[email protected]>
        X-Original-To: [email protected]
        Delivered-To: [email protected]
Received: from server.skynet (server [192.168.1.90]) by
mbp.skynet (Postfix) with ESMTP id 17C30A4ED6C for <[email protected]>; Mon, 6
Dec 2010 15:18:17 -0500 (EST)
Received: from [192.168.1.100] (unknown [192.168.1.100]) by
server.skynet (Postfix) with ESMTP id E536A25ED88 for <[email protected]>; Mon,
6 Dec 2010 15:18:16 -0500 (EST)
        Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii
        X-Mailer: iPad Mail (8C148)
        Message-Id: <[email protected]>
        Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
        Mime-Version: 1.0 (iPad Mail 8C148)
        X-Uidl: ZTg!!%'%#!^5G!!0il!!

The initial Received line shows that the iPad 192.168.1.100 sent the email to
the outgoing
server that I had specified when I set up the account on the iPad
(server.skynet).

I think this was the problem...All of my other configured iPad mail accounts
are configured for
off site access ie Gmail, MobileMe, Exchange etc... so previously the iPad sent
the email to
one of the external sites which could not see my private network.

I tried setting up the pop account with 'localhost' as the outgoing smtp server
but the iPad could
not find a smtp server on itself...

I guess I need to set up a dummy account on server so that the iPad and my
macbook pro don't
fight over grabbing mail from server.skynet.
