I agree. I would consider going down the road after zeroing the drive and then 
running an extended SMART test, to see if many blocks are being reallocated or 
other indicates of pre-drive failure, or aging. Maybe relegate it to a low 
priority task - Time Machine or dd to ISO one drive to this one and just put it 
on a shelf. Just in case.
