I currently have a first generation simultaneous dual band with VPN pass though
Apple Extreme Base Station. Everything including VPN works fine but moving some
computers
upstairs shows a considerable drop in speed.

Grubbing around the internet it appears that antenna technology has improved
and there are 'home routers' that are faster ( up to 450 mbs ) and have an
improved range.

Late last week I went to a nearly near by Apple store and got one of the
new fourth generation Apple Extreme Base stations.

I was disappointed to see that VPN pass through was (still) badly broken.
( I use the L2TP/ipsec VPN software that comes with the mac osx client).

A little history:
When AEBS firmware 7.5.2 emerged I upgraded my router mentioned above.
After a couple of days the VPN connectivity vanished and the only way
I could get it back was to downgrade the firmware to 7.4.2.

When the second generation version of the simultaneous dual band AEBS
came out, I tried it and after power down / restart VPN connectivity vanished
I could not get it back ( hard resets reloading config, etc…). Back it went

It looks the the fourth gen AEBS still has the VPN problem so it will go
  back sometime this week.

So, does anyone have any experience with the newer 450mps (3 x 3) routers
that support at least VPN pass through, simultaneous dual band and wide
channels?

USB support ( HFS+) would be a plus…

Thanks for any suggestions.

Jerry
