I guess I was holding it wrong… I found this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3944 It basically says that if MobileMe is on in the router that changes to port 500 and 4500 will be ignored. I had earlier turned off MobileMe but it did no good. The trick was to remap 500 and 4500 someplace else and then restore the the ports back to pointing to the server.
