You can get the free community edition of Nexentastor. You can build a rather powerful and not very expensive system to use it. You get the power and safety of ZFS on the backend. And it is trivial to get the latest Netatalk added to it. It works rather well for Time Machine (my problem with my NAS server is a HW issue of it shutting itself off -- trying new PS next as new MB did not help).
