In my home office I am using Nexentastor with ZFS for this sort of thing. I installed Netatalk on it as well and all my Time Machine backups for about 5 or so Macs go to that server as well as on different volumes on the same machine all my media, files, code repositories, etc. (some are still being migrated to it) Nexentastor is an OpenSolaris fork with ZFS. http://www.nexentastor.org/ . The community edition is free to use up to something like 17 or 18TB.
