Seriously, technology, and its uses, evolve and change over time.  This is not 
new to computers.   The webs purpose was to disseminate information.  The 
limitations of the day kept it to text with some minor graphics.  As soon as 
those limitations were surpassed it grew.  Others saw the potential of the 
medium and have gone with it.  The "initial purpose" changed as soon as Mosaic 
came out.
