Hi,

Is anyone using a MacMini/EyeTV combination as a digital video recorder (DVR)?
If so, can you please give me some feedback on how well it works and what
problems, if any, I should anticipate?

Currently I have a Panasonic DVR, which works fine, but does not record HDTV.
I have a basic (Time Warner) cable subscription, which allows me to receive
unencrypted (QAM) HD signals for the basic network stations. I am reasonably
happy with this set up, but I would like to be able to record shows in HD.
However, I do not want to pay an extra $40 or $50 per month (or whatever the
cost is) to Time Warner to get their DVR, which requires their (expensive) HD
service. It sounds like TIVO and other similar solutions are also fairly
expensive for what I want (I realize that many other people want more channels
and/or more features, and thus TIVO may make sense for them).

I just picked up an Elgato EyeTV Hybrid on ebay. I have not tried it out yet,
but supposedly that will allow me to receive either over-the-air HD signals
(ATSC) or unencrypted cable HD signals (QAM) on a mac. I have a Mac Pro, but
it is not near my HDTV, so I thought I might buy a Mac Mini and use that,
together with the EyeTV, as a DVR. Before I invest in a Mac Mini, though,
which I do not really need otherwise, I wondered if anyone else was in this
same situation. If so, could you please let me know whether the hardware and
software work well for this purpose? Also, were there any (good or bad)
surprises that you encountered?

Thanks,

Gregg
