Inbetween I have discovered the following:

A/Resources/"
i'm on 10.5.8 intel and i have the 3.1 versions of these apps in
Versions/A, but none such in Versions/A/Resources; those extra
versions certainly seem abnormal
Thanks, Steve. I'm also on a Mini Intel with 10.5.8
Well, your answer is what I guessed...probably an error while updating.
Please let me check the contents.
In Versions/A, I have:
"MobileDevice" (binary)
"AppleMobileSync.app" (universal, v3.1)
"AppleMobileDeviceHelper" (universal, v3.1)
"CodesResources" (a textfile, apparently a plist in xml format)
"Resources" (Folder)
In Versions/A/Resources, I have:
"usbmuxd" (universal binary or CL)
"reenumerate" (universal binary or CL)
"AppleMobileSync.app" (universal app, v1.0.0)
"AppleMobileDeviceHelper" (universal app, v1.0.0)
"Info.plist" (a plist file)
"Version.plist" (a plist file)
a ton of lproj-folders
What I tried until now is putting the two universal apps in Versions/A/
Resources away, but this did not help.
If you could give me an inventary of your two folders, I could
probably repair the whole thing...
