You're confusing (or comparing) a market where there's really only ONE place
to get apps (and that's always been the only real place to get apps) with a
market which has been getting apps in a number of ways for years or decades.
You're also confusing the fact that idea of profit changes when Apple's
getting 30% of $0.99 or $2.99 versus 30% of $49 or $99 or $495.
Suffice to say developers have made money handling distribution, payment
processing, refunds, and eCommerce web sites for far less than 30% for a
long, long time.
