This is probably due to tabs/windows being in separate processes (or so I believe).
Safari won't do this until it uses WebKit2, which it doesn't; i haven't heard much about the WebKit2 project lately ...

I have also installed a few extensions (duplicate tab, exposé view, automatic status bar), but nothing serious or buggy I thought. However, the other day I noticed Safari was using 2GB of *real* memory. Ouch!
Safari rarely reaches 1GB for me (currently 719MB); i usually have 40-80 tabs, but i avoid running Flash (Click2FLash)
