I've definitely installed Leopard multiple times, and possibly Snow Leopard, 
from a FireWire drive without having to burn a disc.

How did you get the installer on the portable drive?  It doesn't work to do a 
Finder copy.  I *think* it didn't even work to use SuperDuper to make a clone.  
I had to use Disk Utility to "back up" the Snow Leopard dmg to a partition on 
the drive.
