The machines that they did ship USB drives with because they didn't have optical drives have even dropped the recovery media in favor of network transfer.
hp tells users to make their own on disk or flash memory. They will also send you a recovery set for $16. A fast HDLC card would be good for this and I've wondered whether Apple had that in mind when including the card reader.
