Hi Kevin, I had the same problem a while back. By the time one Time Machine backup completed, it was just about time to start the next one, so it was virtually always backing up.
My memory is not the greatest, but I'm pretty sure the problem went away when I replaced the Time Machine disk. I don't know whether the old disk went bad, or whether this eventually happens after Time Machine has been in use for a certain amount of time, but I think that when I tried a different backup drive, the backup times got very short again. Of course, the first backup time with the new disk was long, since it had to do a full backup, but after that, the backups only took about a minute or two rather than about 50 minutes. Since you have an iMac, I assume you are using an external backup disk. If you have access to a different disk, give that a try and see if it solves your problem. I know this is not an ideal solution, but in my case the cost of a new disk was worth it to me. I never did go back and reformat the old TM disk to see if it would work correctly again after reformatting. I'd be interested to know if it's typically a hardware issue (i.e., bad drive) or a software issue (i.e., Time Machine goes wacky after a while). I think that between my Mac Pro and my wife's iMac, this same problem has occurred more than once (though often after many years of Time Machine backups). Good luck, Gregg On Feb 17, 2013, at 1:05 AM, Kevin Callahan <[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>> wrote: My iMac takes about an hour to prepare, backup and cleanup. This happens every hour. Oh - add spotlight indexing to that. iE: my internal drive is thrashing ALL the time leaving me a very unresponsive machine. I love Time Machine. I like having hourly backups. But, not having an SSD in my iMac is making it unbearable. What do people think of the new fusion system? or, is it better to go all out with as much SSD as possible? My 4 year old MBPro with an SSD I installed from OWC/MacSales has no problems.
