I was close to resorting to a phone call to Apple when I tried one more time. This time, instead of being presented with a cryptic "error" panel, the storeassetd process went 50% cpu-bound for a few minutes, then the Update button finally became enabled -- but it was unclickable. The GUI seemed hung. I was about to force quit the App Store when it suddenly updated the screen by adding the Pages update to the list of 'Updates Installed in the Last 30 Days'. The lack of a progress indicator was sure a nice touch. Heh, it really fooled me!
-Carl (I was going to make a comment about App Store not being ready for the App Store, but owing to the festive season, I decided not to. ;-) > Then if it were me, Id call Apple and read them the riot act.
