If the criterion is works well with Macs, Brother would be my choice. I never,
ever recommend HP — they have a huge NIH problem, and always want to load
massive software that does things their way instead of the way every other
printer or the Mac itself wants to work. Their hardware is top notch, but their
software and UX are awful. Brother tends to offer the standard "webpage to set
up and reconfigure" route, and their networking is very versatile.

I also never recommend third-party inks, because I've ruined inkjets with them,
including Brothers, so I don't have any recent experience with that.

Someone else recommended the Epson Eco Tank. The special thing about Epsons is
that they use pigment-based ink instead of dye-based ink, so the printouts
don't run when if get wet and the color range is a bit different. I know pro
photographers love them for those features. But I understand that the
pigment-based inks are pricier than the dye inks (and rightly so). Also,
they're more likely to plug printheads if you don't use them constantly, and
harder to clean when they do. They are fine printers in their own right,
especially for photo image quality.
