Reportedly, this command may not work on all models of Mac. However, I am 
heartened by the fact that it worked on my current Mini, which was 
factory-configured to be chime-less, 

The chime has real practical utility: to start up in Safe Mode with a wireless 
keyboard, you cannot hold down the shift key BEFORE the chime, or it will be 
disregarded; and, of course, you cannot hold it down too late. And since there 
are no more optical drives to go chunk-chunk, timing this without a chime can 
be quite a b*h.
